Caroline Bowerman, an experienced and qualified local Travel Consultant, with over 30 years of industry experience, shares 5 global hotspots for 2026!
January is what we call ‘Peaks’ in the Leisure Travel Industry. It’s usually the busiest time of year for new bookings as we all start to plan the year ahead (and possibly desperate to escape the gloomy January UK weather!)
As travel picks up pace in 2026, wanderlust is taking us beyond the usual bucket-list cities to emerging global hotspots. From alpine adventures and tropical islands to cultural capitals and historic cities, these five destinations are capturing travellers’ imaginations and topping search and booking trends worldwide.

Big Sky, Montana, USA
Topping many trend reports is Big Sky, Montana, which has seen a surge in travel interest with a reported 92% increase in global searches since the popularity of the TV show “Yellowstone” and due to its expansive ski terrain featuring over 4,000 vertical feet and hundreds of runs which makes it a dream for snow lovers. But Big Sky isn’t just a winter destination and summertime brings hiking, mountain biking, wildlife viewing, and easy access to Yellowstone National Park, all against the backdrop of Montana’s breathtaking Rocky Mountain landscape.

Okinawa, Japan – A Subtropical Escape
There’s not a week goes by when I don’t received a Japan enquiry. A top trending destination in Asia
which has so much to offer from Tokyo-Osaka-Hakone and Kyoto, but Okinawa is rapidly gaining interest among travellers seeking serene beaches and vibrant coral reefs. The subtropical islands offer
everything from diving and water sports to explorations of Ryukyuan history and lush jungle landscapes.

Sardinia, Italy – Mediterranean Serenity
For lovers of sun, sea, and ancient charm, Sardinia is climbing up there as a Mediterranean favourite.
With interest up more than 60%, Sardinia rivals more crowded Italian coastal destinations, offering
pristine beaches, dramatic sea caves, and Bronze Age sites such as the Nuraghi ruins. Its laid-back
lifestyle, seafood-rich cuisine, and eco-tourism focus have made it one of Europe’s top travel trends for
2026.

Madeira, Portugal – Outdoor Adventures and Year-Round Mild Weather
Europe’s “Island of Eternal Spring” is another destination seeing strong momentum. Madeira has become popular for its dramatic scenery — from towering mountain peaks and coastal cliffs to lush levada walking paths that wind through verdant valleys. The island’s capital, Funchal, offers culture and cuisine alongside outdoor adventure, making Madeira a must-visit for travellers looking for nature, comfort, and culture in one compact destination.

Costa Rica – Rainforest, Beaches and Caribbean Flair
Another regular and firm favourite is Costa Rica’s Caribbean-facing coastline, which has emerged as a
breakout destination in 2026 with a huge spike in search interest. Known for its white-sand beaches,
vibrant Afro-Caribbean culture, and abundant wildlife and rainforests, this coastline (along with the rest of Costa Rica!) offers an authentic blend of nature and culture that’s attracting adventurous travellers
looking to explore beyond the usual Costa Rican Pacific coast.
