Power of Positive Intention

FALLING OFF THE WAGON

We’re all inclined as we go into a new year to look ahead at the plans and goals for what we’d like to achieve and maybe set some new year’s resolutions.  We start out on January 1st with high hopes.  There is a statistic, however, that says most new year’s resolutions are broken by a certain date in the year.  Do you think it is:

21st January
21st February
21st March

If you read to the bottom of this blog you’ll see the answer!

Conscious awareness is the key to a happy and successful life and one of the most empowering things we can do is to set positive intentions EVERY DAY which will lead us to the goal we have in mind and help us to stay “on the wagon” on the way.

From a neuro-science perspective, when we WRITE DOWN and SAY OUT LOUD our positive intentions, and then remind ourselves of them regularly, we are forging new neural pathways and our brain begins to think more positively on a more consistent basis and becomes much more solution-focussed than problem focussed, thus increasing our chances of success exponentially.

There are many tools we can use to help us with setting positive intentions and staying on our path but I’m going to share with you just one 5-minute exercise you can do every day which will create your intention for the day, keeping forward momentum and maximising progress.

Doing this daily helps to minimise the impact of a “bad” day, keeping you on track with baby steps.  As the saying by George Lucas goes “put one foot in front of the other and one day you will look back and see you’ve climbed a mountain”.

DAILY INTENTION STATEMENT EXERCISE

Close your eyes and visualise what it is like to have achieved your ultimate goal.  See it in your mind’s eye as if you have already achieved it.  Allow the positive feelings of how you will feel when you are in this place and see what is happening at this time.  (Visualisation and connecting to the emotions of what you want are essential in moving towards your goals)

You only need to do this for 1 minute!

With your ultimate goal in mind and thinking about your day ahead and what you have to do, write an Intention Statement in your journal like this (writing it down is essential too):

Today it is my intention to feel….

Today it is my intention to be…

Today I am grateful to receive…

Today it is my intention to give…

Once you have written them down read them out loud.

Let me give you an example.  Last January I stepped on the scales, something I hadn’t done for probably a year.  I knew that lockdown, in leggings and baggy jumpers, hadn’t done me any favours but I was truly shocked at the number on the scales!  The last time I weighed that much was the day I gave birth to my son 27 years ago!!  That was all the motivation I needed but I knew I had to approach this from a place of intention, on a daily basis, to move me to a place where I felt light, free, flexible, active, attractive and energetic rather than aiming for a specific number on the scales, which I knew would feel like a mountain to climb.

So, each day I wrote in my journal my Intention Statement which varied day by day depending on how I was feeling and what was going on, so might have been something like:

Today it is my intention to feel light and energetic

Today it is my intention to be kind to myself (maybe after a “bad” day the day before)

Today I am grateful to receive the time for a brisk walk

Today it is my intention to give time at every meal to consciously enjoy my food

By the end of 2021 I had lost 12kgs which I was very happy with and have achieved the feelings I was aiming for!

I hope these tips help you to set positive intentions and achieve your hopes and dreams in 2022.
