Here’s a little TV/Film review from the Sevenoaks Mums team. Family-friendly viewing that we’ve all enjoyed recently and want to share with you!
Francesca & family loves… The Great Pottery Throw Down – Channel 4, 7.45pm Sunday
Feel good family viewing in the vein of the Bake Off or Sewing Bee, 12 contestants compete to be crowned the best potter. We’re 2 weeks in and the creations are amazing! Some serious skill involved handling the clay on the wheel or freehand as well as adding colours which change during firing in the kiln. You never know exactly how it will turn out. Bits crack and fall off, structures collapse and a little magic happens when it all comes together. It inspires us to get creative. Out comes the playdoh! A great show for kids, our ages range from 3 up to 10.
Helen & family loves… The World’s Toughest Race – Eco Challenge Fiji – Amazon Prime
Review:
Bear Ghrylls hosts The World’s Toughest Race where 60 teams (of 4) from all over the world cross Fiji and surrounding islands from start to finish, covering 400 miles of brutal terrain by boat, bike, foot. They race to win the title and $100,000. The challenges teams face are gruelling and there are incredible stories of courage along the way. The strength, determination, resilience and teamwork is inspiring. Competitors are given deadlines to reach 5 checkpoints across 11 days. It’s gripping viewing. A good one for 11 years +
Annabel & family loves… Modern Family (11 series in total!) – Netflix
This is a charming and funny ‘mockumentary’ style sitcom featuring 3 families who are related to each other. It’s an everyday look at their lives with honesty and much laugh-out-loud humour. It’s perfect for kids age 9+ as there’s no smut or nudity and the tricky situations the characters often find themselves in is totally relatable. The dialogue is quick and clever and the characters are all charming in their own way. We’ve enjoyed rediscovering Modern Family ten years on and the kids have been hammering through the back-catalogue of episodes as they’re totally addicted!Millie & family loves… Soul – Disney Plus
Review:
What a fantastically timed film. It looks at the purpose/meaning of life and death. It’s not all philosophy though, there is of course a great story line that totally captures your imagination. My kids loved it but some parents may find it not to be suitable for theirs. Sensitive youngsters or those who are frightened by death might find this movie a bit too much. Older/more matter-of-fact kids will be fine and will enjoy the show. Mine are 3 and 5.
As for the parents, Soul is warm, funny and clever, with jokes that adults will love. It’s also a great starting point for conversations with our kids about what they believe about life and death; what they see as their main interests and passions as well as what really matters to them. What more can we want from a family movie night?
