Make the most of your ‘ME’ time

Founder of The Peacock Rooms, Sarah Rumsey shares with us her secret to relaxation when leading a busy, family life…

‘Ahhhh me time’… So important to our health and happiness, yet ever so elusive since marriage, children, buying houses, walking the dog . . . and never ending list of to do’s. And yet, I still strive to find the time because I honestly believe that it makes me a better mum, wife, professional and make up artist.

For me it can be near on impossible to escape for a whole day, but the odd hour here and there are sometimes just enough for that important ME time that I need.

As a busy mum of three boys and owner of The Peacock Rooms, my little piece of Aveda heaven, my favourite three suggestions for ‘ME time’ at the moment look like this:


1. Relax relax relax . . . in the bath, at home, anywhere!

Take an hour to relax and surround yourself with soothing essential oil blends – they can be used in a hot bath or misted directly onto the skin. I use Aveda aroma experiences on a daily basis, and my particular favourite is the Chakra Balancing Body Mists Number 5. Chakras represent the 7 spinning wheels of energy that affect our health, well-being and beauty and these body mists help to bring these centres back to balance. Number 5 works to balance the throat chakra, which is the centre of creativity. It’s blended with certified organic grapefruit, rosemary, ylang ylang and other pure flower and plant essences.

I am also a big fan of the new Cooling Oil balancing concentrate as its key ingredients of peppermint, blue chamomile and menthol helps awaken the mind and body. Try massaging the oil into your temples using clockwise circular motions or massage into the soles of your feet before bedtime to aid relaxation. 
I always keep a bottle with me when I’m travelling as it really helps to soothe the skin and the senses. I just apply it to my wrists and breathe in the cooling and refreshing aroma. And if you are, or know, a nervous flier it can really help to calm anxiety. Just apply the oil to your wrists and breathe in the aroma to a count of four, then slowly exhale to a count of six.


2. Take a well-earned break to browse the latest make up trends and refresh your spring/summer look.

Spring has always been about refreshing your look and 2017 is yet again embracing the staple bright lips and dewy skin. This year, though we’re seeing the ’80’s paid homage to, with bright shades for eye shadow, coupled with braids a plenty, glitter on the lips and a general essence of individuality.

Of course, these high fashion make up trends are not everyone, so I have picked a couple of my favourites and offered some tips on how to achieve them. (Remember if you feel like treating yourself to a make up edit, I offer two hour lessons at The Peacock Rooms, that are fun and very informative and really embrace the ‘ME’ time).

Bronzed, dewy skin is always a winner come summer. Use a lightweight foundation or tinted moisturiser, mixed with a little illuminating fluid and sweep bronzer over your cheeks and eyes. Aveda provide a beautiful range of cruelty free, natural make up, that includes tinted moisturisers and bronzer to help you achieve this look. Also, as a Charlotte Tilbury pro artist, I love using her beautiful Light Wonder foundation and Wonderglow for that glowing, dewy skin.

Top Tip: Apply bronzer lightly and always blend, blend, blend. Use a large soft brush and apply to the forehead (around the hairline), cheeks and nose for the most natural effect.

Strobing. I’m sure you have heard about the art of contouring and whilst contouring is all about changing your face shape, Strobing is about highlighting your best features and it’s quick and easy to do. Before applying anything with sheen to your face, always exfoliate and moisturise with a light moisturiser.

Top Tip: Remember with highlighting you are going to be bringing everything to the forefront, so your skin needs to be soft and smooth. I love Aveda’s Tulasara Bright concentrate as it delivers just the right amount of hydration without overloading your skin. Apply your usual foundation and blush, and then pop highlighter onto your cheek bones, the bridge of your nose, forehead and above your cupid’s bow. I recommend you try Aveda’s Petal Essence face accents in Seychelle’s Sands or Charlotte Tilbury’s Filmstar Bronze and Glow.


3. Spend time trying out a new hairstyle that’s easy to do and looks great!

What’s a banana bun, I hear you say? Well it’s one of the hottest new styles around right now (see Nicole Kidman) and great for the sporty mum on the go. It’s super quick and is ideal for second day hair and all hair textures. Try my 5 steps, to a soft, fresh look . . .

  1. Step one: Divide your hair into two sections from the crown to behind each ear. This look is about softness– so use a zigzag pattern when sectioning.
  2. Step two: Secure the back into a low ponytail, leaving the ends looped into the elastic forming an oblong shape (the banana).
  3. Step three: Pull front sections back and twist around the ponytail, a bit like you would if you were attempting a French twist. Secure with pins.
  4. Step four: Pick up the loose ends sticking out of the bun, just push them up into the bottom of the ponytail and secure with more pins. This look feels best if there is a bit of randomness, so it’s fine if it isn’t perfect.
  5. Step five: Customize the shape to your liking. If you would like your style to have volume, massage Aveda Shampure dry shampoo at your roots and scrunch with Aveda Air Control hairspray or Aveda Brilliant medium hold hair spray.


Everyone finds different ways to relax and take a break from a busy home, work and family life but really, what is most important is remembering to do it! So whether it’s daily, weekly or monthly, prioritise a little bit of ME time – go on, you deserve it.
